We normally think of an ottoman as a piece of furniture that we can put our feet on. An ottoman is excellent for this particular use but what a lot of people dont realize is that they can use an ottoman for so much more. In this article we will find out a little more about ottomans and what the different uses of this piece of furniture can be.
Quite interestingly, the term is derived from the French word ottomane, which is the feminine version of ottoman. The word could have also been derived from the Italian Ottomano, Medieval Latin Ottomanus, Medieval Greek Othomanoia, from Arabic Utmani. Ottoman was also the name of an empire of the late 16th century.
Ottomans manufactured today are square, rectangular, or round. Square and rectangular configurations are the most popular. Straight edged ottomans come in four basic configurations. The smallest one has a square shape, and it is commonly called Cube Ottoman. The next one consists of two cube ottomans joined together. The third one has three cube ottomans joined together. It is commonly called a Bench Ottoman. The largest one is square-shaped, and it consists of four cube ottomans. In the vast majority of ottomans, each cube has a separate cushion, and a separate storage area. In the models with trays, each cushion can be turned over to use as individual trays.
