The main purpose ottomans serve is for a place to put your feet up on when relaxing on a couch or sofa. They are alternatively used as a place to sit near a table, if they have the proper weight rating and construction designed for this. Ottomans also are often used as a place for storage, which makes them great for family rooms to store toys, games, movies, DVDS, etc. keeping your room tidy and organized. Some even have a removable top with a hard surface that can also serve as a surface to eat food on or play games. Simple ottomans are designed to be a decorative piece for any room and are generally used as a filler piece of furniture.
There are several types of ottomans: standard, storage, ottoman tables, coffee table ottoman and bench. The ottomans were the favorite piece of furniture named after the Ottoman Empire, which lasted from 1299 until 1922. The Ottoman Empire spanned three continents, Western Asia, Eastern and Southeastern Europe and North Africa. World War One ended Ottoman rule in these parts of the world, but not the spread of its cherished footstool. Even after the empire lost its power, the name stuck to this very versatile and useful footrest and its popularity spread like wild fire, especially in America. In one sense, the ottomans have reconquered a large share of the world and arguably, more people know the name now than they did when the real Ottomans were in control.
An ottoman traditionally is a wooden box with cushioning on top. These boxes are used to rest your feet when you are relaxing. Ottomans were very popular in the Ottoman Empire and this is where it gets its name from. Normally ottomans are sold as part of a set and are paired with an armchair or glider. They are designed to match the chair or glider that they are paired with. In most homes they can be found in the living room and are used solely to put up ones feet. Designers are now coming up with innovative ways to use this piece of furniture and there are number of different uses that ottomans can be used for.
A Little More than a Storage Bench. While most of us find the additional storage of a modern ottoman to be ideal, many of us are blown away when we discover that they can also be used as a table. Many of the modern ottoman styles are designed to be used as a table, food tray, foot rest, and storage bench all wrapped into one attractive package. The modern ottoman storage bench can replace that coffee table and help you get control over typical living room clutter.
